Objective To strive for upfront planning practice for our societies is a continued planning process. In light of the urgent need to address climate change issues, meet housing demand with low carbon communities, minimize threats to the environment and fulfill public’s aspiration for higher quality living space, designing our cities to attain all time high environmental standards should be targeted to meet all these challenges. Whilst at a micro level efforts had been made to advocate and build greener buildings, however isolated green buildings or local spaces would not be sufficient. Planning and building low carbon cities on a more comprehensive scale via co-operated efforts amongst Government, academics, professionals, business sectors and the public should be harnessed as a way to achieve high standards of sustainable living for all. This International Conference is to provide a platform for international stakeholders, including government bodies, academics, professionals and business sectors in Hong Kong, the Mainland and various countries to exchange ideas and share experiences on how to plan, design and build low carbon cities for much larger environmental benefits. This Conference would be a place to brainstorm critical social, economic, environmental and urban climate issues, design criteria and principles and major policy and market concerns for developing low carbon cities. Innovative ECO-technologies for sustaining low carbon city developments featured together with policy mechanisms to facilitate its realization would be another key focus of the Conference. Most importantly, case studies of low carbon cities in overseas countries and the Mainland are expected to provide hands-on examples to further explore possible approaches, solutions and mechanisms to achieve environmental friendly and resources efficient future.
