Discovery for Low Carbon Cities: Eco-Tour to Geo-Parks

Background

In order to preserve rich geological interests of Hong Kong and promote the public awareness of environmental protection, the Chief Executive promulgated to set up Geo-Parks in his Policy Address of 2008/09. The establishment of Geo-Parks reflects that Hong Kong can strike a balance between development and environmental conservation and is a city heading towards low carbon cities.

Against such background, two optional Eco-tour trips have been arranged on 23 May 2009:

Eco-Tour 1: Volcanic Rock Tour
Sai Kung East Country Park (High Island Reservoir East Dam)

Introduction of Place

The natural landscape of High Island Reservoir (East Dam) located in the Sai Kung East Country Park was formed by active volcanicity in the ancient times. During the Middle Jurassic period (about 180 million years ago), there were active volcanic activities in the area. Lava coming from craters and volcano ducts together with volcanic ash, gravel and arenite produced from volcanic eruption were cooled and solidified to become a stratum of volcanic rocks nowadays. Geologically speaking, the area is the best outdoor museum displaying volcanic rocks with some outcrops of sedimentary rocks or granite. It will therefore become the core part of Geopark of Hong Kong.

High Island Reservoir is the largest reservoir in the territory and the grandest man-made construction within the country park. The east embankment of the reservoir (480m in length and 100m in height) is lined with a spectacular cofferdam with giant dolosse units, offset by striking rhyolite in hexagonal stacks. The lake commands a brand of beauty all of its own and shapes the unique landscape for Sai Kung. During the trip, you can appreciate different geological features including faults, coastal erosion, sea caves and intrusion of dikes which enchant both leisure travelers and geologists.

Eco-Tour 2: Sedimentary Rock Tour
Ma Shi Chau Special Area

Introduction of Place

Ma Shi Chau Special Area includes Ma Shi Chau, A Chau, Yeung Chau and an unnamed island next to Sam Mun Tsai San Tsuen. Since the area is rich in geological interest with high educational and conservation value, it was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interests (SSSIs) in 1982 and was designated as one of 15 Special Areas in the territory.

The Special Area consists of rich geological features and various interesting landforms, including intrusion of dikes, folding, faults, uncomformities, differential erosion, honeycomb weathering, tombolo, gravel beach, wave-cut platform, various kinds of sedimentary rocks (mudstone, siltstone, sandstone and conglomerate, etc.), quartz, porphyry and fossils. It is a valuable place displaying the oldest sedimentary rocks in Hong Kong. Because of its significant geological interests, active research has been carried out by scientists in this area.
