Seminar – Light Be - Empowerment Housing

  • HKIP Office Unit 201, 2/F, Prosperity Millennia Plaza, 663 King’s Road, North Point, Hong Kong (map)

Our city is building more and more housing but still many cannot afford to have a roof over their heads not to mention to live with dignity. On the other hand, many landlords are willing to rent at below-market rates, but it can be difficult for them to rent their apartments to the less fortunate without checking first to see if a tenant really needs it or if they will abuse the landlord's kindness.

Light Be was founded by Ricky Yu to bridge the landlords with the tenants. Whilst its Light Home scheme helps these landlords to use their resources in a happier manner, it is more than a housing scheme. "Housing is a must but people need a holistic approach to excel and thrive. Light Home is an Empowerment Housing to achieve this purpose", Ricky states.

From the very first test apartment, Ricky started to help the tenants not just with housing but also in other non-traditional ways. Tenants have to set targets and action plans for themselves. They have to move on after they have met their targets. Since Light Home launched its first project in 2013, most of the tenants experience improvement in life circumstances in two years, giving the entire program a success rate of over 80%. Based on the experience of Light Home, Ricky has recently turned an idle building into social housing called Sham Tseng Light Housing (photo below).

About the Speaker
Ricky quitted his corporate career, utilizing everything he learnt about business and entrepreneurship to find a social enterprise called Light Be. His vision for Light Be is to provide Empowerment Housing which does not only meet the housing needs of the tenants but also equip them with life survival skills. Ricky is also a member of the advisory committee to the Hong Kong Government for social enterprise development and a member of Aspen Global Leadership Network. He is named Hong Kong's Social Innovator by SIE Fund, awarded Spirit of Hong Kong Award by SCMP, and a speaker for TED as well as various universities, government departments and social enterprise conferences.
