It has always been the Government's goal to protect, conserve and revitalise Hong Kong’s historical and heritage sites and buildings as appropriate for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. On 16 April, the Young Planners Group (YPG) is going to host a guided heritage and gallery tour to Former Explosives Magazine (the heritage site) and the gallery of Asia Society Hong Kong Centre (the Centre) to enhance member's understanding on to how the former British military structure was preserved and revitalised. Participants will also grasp a deeper understanding in how the Heritage Conservation Policy is closely connected with planning of a city.
The heritage site is a complex of former military structures consisting two former explosives magazines and one laboratory building. The former military structures were built by the British Army in the mid-19th century and formed parts of the Victoria Barrack in Admiralty. The heritage site was graded as a Grade I Historic Building in 2010 and was successfully transformed into a cultural, artistic and intellectual hub in 2012. It is now serving as an important tangible link to the history Hong Kong. The Centre also hosts exhibitions related to Hong Kong’s historical and current colonial complexity. We will take a look at Shahzia Sikander: Apparatus of Power which is presented by Shahzia Sikander. We welcome all HKIP members to join this fruitful Heritage and Gallery Tour with us!
