[JOIN US!] YPG Community Outreach Event Helpers Recruitment

Dear Young Members,

Would you like to have a taste of organizing community outreach events related to interactive mapping? If you haven't got the chance to join us in community engagement projects before, grab this chance now!

YPG is participating in the ‘spaceplusfestival’ (Eastern District) 「非常社區節(東區)」organized by Very Hong Kong in March 2024 as one of the community partners. Following Very Hong Kong’s placemaking journey in Yau Tsim Mong District last year, they have continued to unite more than 20 community groups and individuals to organize various handicraft experiences, urban explorations, and achievement exhibitions that all people can participate in to voice their aspirations for the Eastern District.

This year, YPG will hold an interactive booth in Shau Kei Wan and Quarry Bay that invites participants to map their favourite places and routes that highlight thematic characteristics of Eastern District through drawings, photographs, and textual descriptions. We are now recruiting helpers to make this meaningful event happen! This would be a great taster for those who would like to organize placemaking events with YPG in the future!

Seminar - Transitional Housing: Challenges and Achievements of Hong Kong with reference to International Cases (6 June 2023, Tuesday)

Abstract:

Transitional housing has emerged in Hong Kong as an alternative housing form to provide speedy short-term improvement of living conditions for those who live in sub-divided flats and on the long waiting list for public rental housing. Many NGOs, development and construction-related professionals and private developers are quickly mobilized to echo the Government’s policy objective of providing about 20,000 transitional housing units by end of 2024. Innovative method known as “modular integrated construction” (MiC) has been widely explored and applied.

The on-going “Study on Effective Transitional Housing Delivery in Hong Kong” has reviewed the transitional housing projects in Hong Kong as well as experiences from cities including Vancouver, London, Taipei, Amsterdam, Queensland and Auckland. The interim findings of the Study will be shared in this seminar regarding how effective Hong Kong has been doing in the delivery of transitional housing with reference to international cases.

The Light Public Housing proposed by the current term of Government, which by its very nature, can also be categorized an alternative type of transitional housing. Summarizing local and overseas experiences, the speaker will also share his views regarding the inter-play of the transitional housing programme and the Light Public Housing programme with a view to facilitating a smooth and effective whole-life implementation of these projects.

Acknowledgement: The “Study on Effective Transitional Housing Delivery in Hong Kong” is funded by the Strategic Public Policy Research funding scheme of the Hong Kong SAR Government (Project No.: S2020.A6.014.20S).

Collaboration Event by Community Engagement Committee of HKIP and Social Ventures Hong Kong

Inadequate housing, poverty, and disruption of normal social life under the pandemic are among some of the biggest issues our society is facing. To foster sustainable development, collaboration between town planners and different parties is crucial. The Community Engagement Committee (CEC) of HKIP values partnership and has been continuously exploring co-creative collaboration opportunities.

Social Ventures Hong Kong (SVhk), a pioneer of supporting social enterprises and encouraging social innovation, is one of our potential collaborators. Rooted in Sham Shui Po, SVhk has been actively working on community engagement and placemaking in the neighbourhood. Some of the successful projects include “HATCH (合廠)” on providing industrial career opportunities to women and “Light Be (要有光)” on innovating a new mode for the provision of transitional housing. To promote a sustainable co-living model, an ongoing initiative by SVhk is to create a space that facilitates face-to-face interaction between community members under the pandemic. SVhk is also introducing a more creative and artistic approach to the practice of community engagement. For example, “Creative Beings @ Sham Shui Po (心浪潮@深水埗)” is a project that uses film to record the stories of the young people and artisan shops in Sham Shui Po within the gentrification discourse.

CEC is glad to organise the first event in collaboration with SVhk. The event includes three sections: (i) site visit to SVhk’s COMM,ON Community Clubhouse; (ii) sharing by SVhk on their community engagement work and impact philosophies; and (iii) informal idea jam session on further collaboration opportunities between SVhk and HKIP. The event will provide a platform for an exchange of ideas between the two organisations on how to solve burning issues of our city from new perspectives. HKIP members’ participation is much welcomed.

The details of the event are as follows:

Date: 15 October 2022 (Saturday)

Time: 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (Please arrive 10 minutes before the event starts)

Venue: Sham Shui Po hub of SVhk (Address: G/F and 1/F, Tower 3, Trinity Towers, 213 Yee Kuk Street, Sham Shui Po)

Language: Cantonese

Quota: 20

Remarks: All participants are requested to confirm a negative RAT test result from the same day on arrival.

If you are interested in joining the event, please fill in the following form on or before 5 October 2022 (Wednesday): https://forms.gle/bxqDnEAp3ZfGabUJ8. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and priority will be given to members of CEC.
