Sponge City

The black storm happened on 9 August 2023 has paralysed our city. The infrastructure of this international city was unprecedentedly challenged and severely damaged. Images of unstoppable floods and land being reduced to swamps, which we used to see in TV boxes but in other remote cities, became vivid experience and lingering fears of our own. Will it recur? Will it get worse? With the effect of climate change, everyone has the answers.

In this issue we get to know the concept of “sponge city”. Although Hong Kong is a well-developed city, the insufficiency of existing flood prevention and drainage system reflects the need for upgrading and improving.  Under the sponge city concept, every bits of our future development can be turned into a cornerstone of improving the resilience and sponginess of Hong Kong. With concerted efforts of professionals in urban development and management, it is never too late to turn our city around, and we must do so for the good of our future generations!
