Sponge City : Artificial/Constructed Wetland

In pursuit of “urban-rural integration” and “co-existence of development and conservation”, the Northern Metropolis Development Strategy embraces the conservative potential of artificial/constructed wetlands.  As this bustling metropolis expands, the challenges for finding innovative solutions for matters such as stormwater management and ecological preservation would intensify.  In this month’s issue, we will explore the synergistic relationship amongst nature, development and artificial/constructed wetlands, showcasing how these innovative green infrastructures could help urban planning and a sustainable future for Hong Kong.

Artificial/constructed wetlands are a key component of “Sponge City” strategies.  Artificial/constructed wetland has emerged as an innovative solution to offer a range of benefits that address pressing environmental challenges.  These artificial/constructed ecosystems provide effective stormwater management, improve water quality, habitat conservation, and aesthetic enhancements by replicating the functions of natural wetlands.
