The Hong Kong Institute of Planners (HKIP) Awards - Young Planners Awardee 2023 Sharing Session

Following our announcement of the Hong Kong Institute of Planners (HKIP) Awards 2023 in the preceding year, we are pleased to invite you to a sharing session featuring Ms. Chin-chin Lam, our recipient of the Young Planners Award 2023 (YPA). This sharing session offers a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from a young professional engaged in climate adaptation and urban resilience.

As part of her award journey, Chin-chin conducted two international visits, namely the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan and a study visit to the Netherlands.

(1)  At COP29, Chin Chin participated in adaptation negotiations as an observer and presented at the Multilevel Action and Urbanization Pavilion. She engaged with global experts, youth, and local governments to understand how climate change is impacting urban areas and how multilevel governance and community action are driving resilience.

(2)  In the Netherlands, she explored how cities integrate water into their urban form, visiting the Global Center on Adaptation in Rotterdam, floating communities in Amsterdam, and flood-resilient public spaces including the Water Square and Tidal Park. She also examined play areas designed with rain gardens and wading pools, and studied sustainable transport and regeneration initiatives in Utrecht. Her visit concluded with the Oosterscheldekering storm surge barrier, part of the renowned Delta Works.

(3)  She will also share reflections from her current role as a Sustainability Officer in Planning in London, highlighting how climate considerations are being embedded into planning systems.

We are keen to understand the planning-related topics Chin-chin has raised and discussed throughout the whole trip. This sharing session will provide valuable context and allow members to engage with Chin-chin’s perspectives on climate change, international collaboration, and the role of planners in shaping a sustainable future.
